A full-book workflow

Long manuscripts are processed in stages, not squeezed into one prompt.

The local script preserves your original, discovers chapters, creates stable chunks, and records a manifest. The agent first reads across the book to build context, then works through each chunk. Completed chunks are saved to disk, so an interrupted run resumes from the first unfinished item.

Your files stay in your workspace. The script sends nothing to EditRoast. The AI product you choose still receives the text it processes under that provider's terms.
1

Source protectedThe original is copied into input/ and never edited.

2

Context maintainedA book map or style sheet carries decisions across chapters.

3

Progress savedstate.json tracks complete and pending chunks.

4

Claims checkedThe validator catches skipped chunks and mismatched quotes.

Synthetic example

A finding you can trace back to the text.

The release includes The Bell Below, a three-chapter manuscript written for testing. No client work is used.

R-001 · Major · Chapter 3

“Mara thought of her father, the moving map, and the clock that had lied for thirty years. She turned the gear forward.”

Diagnosis

Mara's final choice invokes her father before that relationship has acquired enough scene weight. Seed a concrete memory, object, or costly belief earlier so the action reads as her choice rather than the plot selecting the dramatic lever.

Transparent and testable

Open source. Local Python workflow. Provider-aware privacy.

The included Python scripts only prepare local chapters, keep progress, and verify quotations. They do not upload manuscripts or call EditRoast servers. A reproducible GitHub Actions check scans Python entry points and all three release ZIP packages for suspicious network imports, executable calls, private file paths and common credential patterns. This project-run check is not an external security certification.

Important distinction: once you ask Codex, Claude Code or another AI service to analyze text, that service may receive the passages it reads according to its own terms. Review its data and training policies before using confidential work.

Questions authors ask

What the free pack does—and does not—promise.

Is this really free?

Yes. All three ZIP downloads are free, require no account, and use the MIT open-source license. Codex, Claude Code, or another AI provider may require its own paid plan or API usage.

Does “any length” mean unlimited and instant?

There is no hard-coded manuscript word cap. The workflow splits long books and resumes across sessions. A longer book still takes more model turns, time, and provider allowance.

Will EditRoast receive or store my manuscript?

No. The preparation and validation scripts run locally and make no EditRoast network request. The AI provider you use receives whatever text its agent reads; check that provider's privacy and retention settings.

Does the proofreading skill rewrite my DOCX?

No. Version 1 produces an auditable Markdown correction report. It does not silently change the source or claim to preserve complex DOCX structure and tracked changes.

Which file types work?

TXT, Markdown, and ordinary DOCX. EPUB is deliberately deferred in v1 to keep installation dependency-free and predictable.

What if the run stops halfway through?

Run the status command shown in the README. The workspace records every completed chunk and continues from the pending list.

From a working author's experience

Built around real problems writers face.

The inspiration for EditRoast came from author Nadi Petrova's experience preparing and publishing her books. These open skills are free tools for authors who want to examine their own manuscripts before deciding on the next step.
