Fantasy is not one reader list
Epic fantasy, cozy fantasy, grimdark, urban fantasy and romantasy make different promises. Hard science fiction, climate fiction, cyberpunk and space opera have equally different audiences. Identify two precise shelf labels, not fifteen hashtags.
What genre reviewers need
State whether the novel is standalone or a numbered series, length or approximate reading commitment, setting and central premise, spoilers policy, level of romance and content considerations. For complicated worlds provide a spoiler-free glossary or map only if the book actually contains them.
How to find specialist outlets
Browse recent review archives, genre podcasts, smaller BookTube channels and publication guidelines. Strange Horizons illustrates how selective speculative-fiction criticism can be. Do not assume it accepts unsolicited author review copies.
A fantasy blogger pitch
Hi [Name], your review of [specific cozy/epic/dark fantasy] suggests your audience enjoys [true shared feature]. My independently published [subgenre] novel [Title] follows [character and concrete fantasy stakes]. It is [standalone/book number]. May I offer an EPUB for consideration? Here is a sample: [link].
A sci-fi podcast pitch
Your recent episode examined [accurate scientific or ethical question]. My SF novel asks [specific related dilemma] in a [hard SF/near-future/space opera] setting. I'd be glad to discuss the research and writing choices, without turning the episode into an advertisement. Would a short pitch sheet be useful?
World-building does not replace a story
Promotional art and a complex lore bible may attract a niche, but editors also need an intelligible protagonist and choice. Use one clear line on what changes if the character fails. Honest comparisons are helpful; 'the next Dune' is not evidence.
From awareness to proof
Keep a canonical book page, accurate retailer descriptions, the first chapter and a list of published independent reviews. Record URL and outcome. Start with the outreach tracker and visibility fundamentals.
