Why cold review pitches fail
The problem is seldom the number of emails. Reviewers receive more books than they can read; many work voluntarily and restrict requests by format, publication status and genre. The first job is to match the book to a reader, not automate a hundred identical requests.
Find five reviewers who actually read your genre
Use BookSirens' reviewer directory or discover blogs through books similar to yours. Open each reviewer policy and check the last two posts, willingness to accept indie titles, EPUB versus print, whether books already released qualify, and whether requests are open. Avoid paying for a positive review or concealing that you supplied a copy.
Write a 120-word book-review pitch
Include a genuine reason you selected that reviewer, title and precise subgenre, self-published status, a two-sentence plot premise, an official book page, a free excerpt and the format you can supply. Example:
Hi [Name], I noticed you review contemporary family fiction and accept independently published EPUBs. My novel [Title] explores [specific premise] and seems aligned with your recent coverage of [book]. Here's the synopsis and opening chapters: [link]. Would you consider an EPUB for an honest, independent review? There is no preferred rating or deadline. Thank you for your time.Do not use this without replacing the personalized facts.
If the queue is closed, pitch a useful alternative
Some outlets accept interviews or first-person essays separately from reviews. A specific story about craft, translation, a career change or research methods is more interesting than a generic cover reveal. A book-club discussion kit and accurate author media kit make the pitch easier to evaluate.
How to track outcomes
Record outlet, contact, rule URL, genre, date, message, reply, deadline and published URL. One courteous follow-up is reasonable only where allowed. A reply is not a publication; a publication is not guaranteed sales. Check for email bounces and remove invalid addresses rather than retrying endlessly.
Where editing fits
Only offer a completed, suitable review copy. If proofing or plot continuity are still in doubt, revise before approaching reviewers. EditRoast Open Skills can help structure local file preparation for review, but an external AI provider may receive the passages you ask it to analyze.
