What a query must prove in seconds
The agent needs a precise genre, book length, premise, stakes, author information and assurance that the manuscript can legally be represented. An impressive social following cannot repair a missing plot or uncertain rights.
Already self-published? Say so upfront
Previously released editions may still have unlicensed foreign-language, audio or territory rights, but availability varies by store agreements and existing arrangements. Don't claim all rights are free until you inspect those agreements. Do not invent publication dates, ISBNs or sales numbers to complete a web form. Some firms consider subsidiary-rights management for independent authors, while others only want unpublished novels.
What to send and what not to send
If a specific agent uses QueryManager or a custom form, use that rather than guessing an email. Follow the requested first pages, synopsis length and exact format. A synopsis for agents normally reveals the complete plot and ending; it is not the spoiler-free description on the book's public page. Don't attach a complete manuscript unless explicitly required.
Adapt the pitch to the acquisition list
Research books the agent or imprint actually represents or publishes, not just the words 'commercial fiction' on an old directory. Explain a real thematic comparison while avoiding unsupported claims that famous writers endorse you. See how to find an agent and query letter guidance.
Avoid two costly mistakes
Never use a mass-blind-CC email to agents; it implies no knowledge of submission policies. Do not buy a promise of representation. Legitimate commission-based agents generally evaluate work without upfront representation fees; inspect any paid editorial referral or optional service separately.
A concise query outline
Start with title, word count, genre and a truthful comparison. State the protagonist's goal and the decision that changes the plot. Explain the stakes and central complication. Add one paragraph on your relevant experience, publication history and currently available rights. Close with materials supplied according to the agent's policy.
